Abstract:The purpose of this article lay in understanding the main function of the different screw elements during extrusion process, which could help to optimize the screw configuration. The different screw elements include 1 transfer element (TE1), 1 reverse element (TE2), and 3 kneading block (KB) with different stagger angle, such as KB1 with 45°,KB2 with 90°,and KB3 with -45°, and 1 tooth block (TB1). The influence of 6 pieces of different screw elements on the torque and the pressures of 4 sites along the extruder barrel during texturizing soy protein with a Brabender twin-screw extruder (DSE-25) was investigated. The effect of screw elements on the torque and pressures is significant. The sequence of screw elements with decreasing torque is TE2, TB1, KB3, KB2, KB1, and TE1. The sequence of screw elements with decreasing pressures is TE2, TB1, TE1, KB1, KB2, and KB3. KB1 and KB2 has better system stability than TB1 and KB3.
